Let's Meal Prep! Easy Way To Save Time And Monday

Meal prep is a great way to simplify your lifestyle. For those who don’t know, meal prep is when you prepare meals for the week in advance, package your meals and eat them throughout the week. I highly recommend choosing recipes that are easy to make with ingredients that aren’t difficult to find.

Meal prep is more than just eating the same thing everyday throughout the week. It doesn’t have to be boring. Spice it up with a variety of recipes and throw a couple of your favorites in there to start.

Step 1: Use containers that keep your food fresh and make it easy to heat up. I recommend glass because it keeps food fresh longer. Glass is microwave safe so you don't have to worry about placing your meals into another dish to reheat. Glass containers are also dishwasher safe and make for a quick and easy clean up. Convenience is the key.

Step 2: Prepare a menu and shopping list. I recommend doing this step together. Find recipes that use the same ingredients so you can kill two birds with one stone. It's also a good idea to know what you want each meal to consist of. For example, protein, complex cards and fruits/veggies. This will also make it easier to construct a menu and shopping list.

I decided to prepare 2 different meals for my first week of meal prep. I started with my favorite go-to chicken recipes, Thai Chicken Salad and Mexican Chicken Wrap. I drafted my shopping list on my phone so I wouldn't forget it.

Meal prep doesn't have to be a chore. It's about setting yourself up for success by choosing the best course of action for your lifestyle. Maybe you decide to meal prep breakfast so you can get to the gym in the mornings or lunch so you avoid eating out during the week. Here's a list of benefits I experienced while meal prepping:

  • Saves time - I managed to spend less time during the week thinking about what to cook or what to eat. Since my meals were prepared I didn't have to fuss with cleaning or going shopping during the week. I had more time to enjoy myself and relax after work.
  • Saves money - My shopping list made it easy to shop with focus. I spent less money because I had a plan versus walking down the aisles guessing what I needed. The list also helped me stay clear of tempting foods I don't need.
  • Promotes a healthy lifestyle - Eating with intention is the foundation to any healthy lifestyle. I found that I managed my portions and ate for fuel versus out of emotion. This was the perfect balance for me. Moderation is the key for me and eating well balanced meals during the week helps me feel like I've earned the right to splurge on the weekends.
  • Reduces waste - Since I had a plan and my meals were prepared for each day, I didn't have any leftovers. I ate everything I prepared.

This experience taught me the biggest obstacle to meal prep is mindset. It's always a bit of challenge to switch things up. But just like everything else in life, once you start and reap the benefits, you're hooked.
